Interpolation search - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | Interpolation search (sometimes referred to as extrapolation search) is an algorithm for searching for a given key value in an indexed array that has been ordered by the values of the key. It parallels how humans search through a telephone book for a particular name, the key value by which the book's entries are ordered. In each search step it calculates where in the remaining search space the sought item might be, based on the key values at the bounds of the search space and the value of the sought key, usually via a linear interpolation. | when key is ordered and evenly distributed, this could be a very good algorithm for searching | search | 3 weeks, 5 days ago |
| Slow Down Your Hedonic Treadmill | When things are awesome, we eventually get used to it (celebrities, lottery winners). When things are really awful, we get used to that as well (severely injured). This is why it’s hard for people to achieve a constantly higher level of happiness. Stay Happy By Slowing Down Pleasure. Considering that we only experience transient pleasure with many improvements in our lives, we should take care and indulge very gradually. Savor each slight improvement! When Slashing Expenses, Make Big Cuts. On the other hand, we should take full advantage of our adaptability by cutting back as much as possible all at once when we have to. Don’t slow down the pain and drag it out with constant reminders. “It will be really painful for a few months but you’ll get used to it,” says Ariely. “It might be good to cut down too much — and then increase back.” By contrast, making small lifestyle adjustments every month requires readapting over and over and prolongs the pain. | life behavior | 4 weeks ago | ||
| business internet | 4 weeks, 1 day ago | ||
| 21 Things You Should Never Buy New | If you're looking to get the most value for your dollar, it would do your wallet good to check out secondhand options. Many used goods still have plenty of life left in them even years after the original purchase, and they're usually resold at a fraction of the retail price, to boot. Here's a list of 21 things that make for a better deal when you buy them used. | frugal living saving | 1 month ago | ||
| The Culture of Exposure | So every few weeks I find myself on the receiving end of little burst of off-the-record trash talk. Senators privately moan about other senators. Administration officials gripe about other administration officials. People in the White House complain about the idiots in Congress, and the idiots in Congress complain about the idiots in the White House — especially if they’re in the same party. Washington floats on a river of aspersion. It feels good to vent in this way. You demonstrate your own importance by showing your buddies that you are un-awed by the majority leader, the vice president or some other big name. You get to take a break from the formal pressures of the job by playing the blasphemous bad-boy rebel over a beer at night. | media politics leadership military | 1 month ago |
